OPAL play programme

Stoneham Park is proud to be involved in the OPAL programme. OPAL, which stands for Outdoor Play and Learning, is a supported school development approach that places play at the heart of children’s learning and growth.
The programme emphasises the important role that purposeful and well‑planned play has in supporting children’s physical health, social skills and emotional wellbeing. With children spending roughly one fifth of their school day outdoors at play, we believe this time should be purposeful, enriching and accessible to everyone.
At Stoneham Park, we are fortunate to have extensive and diverse outdoor spaces. These areas provide children with opportunities to experiment, design, explore, communicate with others, take safe risks and challenge themselves, while fully enjoying their play experiences.
We hold regular OPAL assemblies where children are encouraged to reflect on their playtimes, celebrate achievements and contribute ideas to help us continue developing our outdoor provision.
- Children who feel happy, settled and ready to learn
- Growing resilience and confidence through problem‑solving and challenge
- Playtimes that are inclusive and responsive to a range of interests and abilities
- Inquisitive learners who ask “What if…?”, “Why…?” and “I wonder…?”
- Positive relationships, cooperation and mutual care
- And most importantly, playtimes full of enjoyment and fun
OPAL is a long‑term initiative, and we would like to thank families for their ongoing encouragement and generous contributions. We look forward to sharing further updates and developments as the project continues.
